The new monkeys arrive

We arrived at the Mariposa at about 2:30 yesterday, after 14 hours of travel on four hours of sleep.  The eco lodge is the epitome of consciousness: all employees are local and 99% of the money generated here goes directly back to the local community.  We use electricity from the sun, recycled water for cooking and showers, eat local food we grow, drink local fruit juice and drink local beer.
We settled into our rooms, opened the windows to the cicadas and jasmine, welcomed the occasional spider, and then joined Paulette (the director) for a charla (chat) about the history of the place, shared a communal dinner, and were treated to drumming by Nick Bear, our Penobscot tribal member.
This morning, everyone is emerging from the rooms with smiles and heading for the kitchen for local coffee ~ our learning adventure has begun ~
